The group of Prof. Fischer develops specialised microchips with photo sensitive pixels, which can detect even a single optical photon. 8 different designs have been handed over to a chip manufacturer end of 2023. The submitted chips target a wide range of applications, like the search for dark matter (DARWIN, XLZD), for measuring the neutrino mass (KATRIN, NEXT), to read out optical fibres, to measure distances optically (LIDAR) or to determine photon multiplicities in quantum optics. Several chips have been designed by students of the Master Program “Computer Engineering” in the focus area “Chipdesign”.

Today - finally - the first silicon wafers have arrived! The 20cm diameter discs contains several chips of each type. One chip is now being commissioned on our wafer prober, see image.
