Abstract:
The borderlines between virtual and physical forms dissolve and allow unprecedented transitions in both directions. New 3D scanners provide insight on various length scales and unveil an increasingly larger variety of geometric forms in nature. New 3D fabrication technologies produce physical shapes with a variety of new materials and of new internal structures. Few is yet understood. The mathematical language for shapes needs to be revisited, including geometry processing and modelling technologies. The talk will show selected examples from biology, computer graphics and industrial CAD to illustrate open questions related to the novel wealth of shapes.

Short CV:
Konrad Polthier is full professor of mathematics at Freie Universität Berlin (FU) since 2005. He received his PhD from the University of Bonn in 1994, and headed research groups at Technische Universität Berlin and Zuse Institute Berlin before joining FU Berlin. His current research focuses on discrete differential geometry, applied geometry, geometry processing and mathematical visualization. Results from him have been applied in industry such as computer graphics, computer aided design and architecture.
