In this talk, Dirk Koch explores a rarely considered threat model for cloud-hosted FPGAs: deliberately maximizing power consumption instead of minimizing it. By bypassing typical design rule checks, clock constraints, and power-safety mechanisms, his work demonstrates how carefully crafted FPGA designs can create extreme localized hotspots, accelerate device aging, and ultimately render cloud FPGA instances unreliable — without violating the overall power budget.
