In the VLSI Design course of the Master’s program Technische Informatik, students work on real integrated circuit designs at transistor level. Instead of a traditional written exam, the course follows a project-based approach in which students design functional chip components addressing concrete technical problems, with the explicit goal of fabrication readiness.

As part of this course, selected designs can be included in a real chip run. One of these designs has now been successfully manufactured and returned from fabrication as real silicon. The chip can be tested and evaluated using a dedicated test board.

The chip shown in this project is a seven-segment decoder, designed independently by Patrick Szegedi.
