Master’s Program in Computer Engineering

The Master’s program in Computer Engineering at Heidelberg University offers a research-oriented education at the interface of hardware, software, and emerging computing systems. Organized by the Institute of Computer Engineering (ZITI) and the Faculty of Engineering, the program prepares students for advanced research, development-oriented careers, and doctoral studies. Building on a solid foundation in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or the natural sciences, students deepen their expertise through advanced modules and practical research work. The program offers specializations in Emerging Computing and Chip Design, reflecting the central research areas of ZITI and enabling students to shape their studies according to their interests. A strong emphasis is placed on independent scientific work. Through seminars, a study project, and the master’s thesis, students learn to investigate current research questions, apply modern methods, document their results, and present them in an academic setting. At the same time, the curriculum encourages interdisciplinary thinking, teamwork, communication skills, and practical application experience. The program is typically completed in four semesters and leads to the degree Master of Science (M.Sc.). With its balance of fundamentals, specialization, practical work, and opportunities such as elective courses and study abroad, the Master’s program in Computer Engineering provides an excellent environment for students who want to help design the computing systems of the future.
