Dear interested students!

The new Master of Science in Computer Engineering ('MScTI') at Heidelberg University is offered by the department of physics and astronomy and started in winter term 2011/2012 as a full-time study program and in winter term 2014/15 as a part-time study program. When designing the course program, we have set a high value on creating a clear structure and defining an attractive and relevant content. Some outstanding characteristics of our MScTI are:

  • Good balance between fundamental and advanced content
  • Clear structure with standardized module sizes
  • Large fraction of hands-on courses
  • Possibility to easily integrate a semester abroad
  • Free choice in extra (minor) courses
  • Dedicated soft skill courses
  • Master thesis with possibility of an introductory student project
  • Exciting specializations (Major):
    • Microelectronics
    • Application Specific Computing
    • Intelligent Autonomous Systems
    • Robotics and Biomechanics

This page contains some information about the MScTI. More details can be found in the module description and further documents available in the Download Area. Do not hesitate to contact Michaela Binder or Peter Fischer with your questions.

Is this Study Program Interesting for Me?

Computer Engineering is a thrilling research area combining Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Physics. Typical subject areas are the architecture, design and realization of computers, communication networks and embedded systems on the hardware level or the development of hardware-related software. When speeding up complex and challenging computations it is necessary to know the hardware thoroughly to find fast and efficient solutions. Here, ‚normal’ CPUs, clusters, graphic cards or self-designed special computers (very often reconfigurable) are used. Within the frame of our central topic Application Specific Computing we do research on all levels from the development of chips, the acceleration of GPUs up to optical communication. Building application specific hardware is another core topic ranging from analog chips for sensor applications, to mixed-mode systems, to highly complex digital communication ASICs. In the field of Robotics we build error tolerant autonomous systems showing intelligent behavior based on modern automatic control engineering. The results of our research are applied to physics, astronomy, medicine, biology etc. in national and international projects.

The Master of Science in Computer Engineering at Heidelberg University addresses graduates from B.Sc. programs in Computer Science or Natural Sciences with a sufficient minor in Computer Science (recommended 24 CP). Applicants should be interested in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics and Physics to be able to work successfully. According to their personal interest, students can focus on one of the areas

  • Microelectronics,
  • Application Specific Computing,
  • Intelligent Autonomous Systems,
  • Robotics and Biomechanics.

Our program in Computer Engineering offers various choices and particularly aims at practical applications. It is strongly interconnected with the Natural Sciences in the environment of Heidelberg University.

Competences and knowledge taught in the program are more and more demanded by the industry to deal with complex modern information systems. Possible working areas are the design and operation of cluster computers, the development of detectors and hardware, measurement engineering, hardware-related programming (embedded systems, wireless communication), audio technology, vehicle control systems, safety engineering, etc., just to name a few.
